Kaveh takes a deep breath, then detaches his oxygen mask himself in favor of kissing Alhaitham once more. Kaveh’s life hangs in the fine balance of science and magic, and yet nothing feels as fantastical as these breathless moments. He silences the warnings, dismisses the alarms, and kisses Alhaitham until he is swimming in the heat of Alhaitham’s breath and the beat of his heart. “So warm,” he sighs with the last of his reserves, and slumps against Alhaitham’s chest to wait for Alhaitham to refit the respirator to his face once more. Deep breaths, cold air creeping back in and replacing the warmth, and Kaveh accepts it with quiet grace. When Kaveh lifts his head again, Alhaitham is looking down at him with such fondness in his eyes that Kaveh worries his mechanical heart might simply overload and cease functioning. “Must you push yourself to your limits?” “If I didn’t, you would.” “That’s true.” End quote
