I just think that we can look past the hype at the real breakthroughs these guys are making and try to use this tech to solve some real challenges.
Just because we never got the flying car, doesn't mean that regular cars weren't a huge benefit.

That quote takes out some significant context. I would encourage you to actually watch the interview. Hasabis is not making a claim that we will colonize the galaxy by 2030

Your quarrell is with the headline. This is what he actually said after being asked about a best case scenario: "If that all happens, then it should be an era of maximum human flourishing, where we travel to the stars and colonize the galaxy. I think that will begin to happen in 2030"

There is a lot of hype, but there is some really exciting science happening as well.
Having said that, solving the protein folding problem would have been an absurd and ridiculous claim a couple of years before AlphaFold.

Ok. But I fear that people are dismissing some tremendous advancement that this tech will enable by just shutting themselves off because "it's a cult".
I think iPhone users are in a cult but that doesn't mean that it's not a useful tool.

It just sounds like you are not very familiar with AI tech. There is so much more than LLMs. Hasanis got the Nobel prize in chemistry for AlphaFold which is not a language model.
