I got a few tiny specks, but only did it once, and could be done better (didn't follow all the guides - like do it it a humid environment, to have less dust in the air).
Should be possible to do it without bubbles.
Maybe if applied at the store (if you buy it there, instead of have it delivered).

Have you tried a protector like Paperlike? - it helps a lot from my experience (I second the "writing on ice", felt the same).
