Was replying specifically to the commenter, not directly to your OP. Obviously cursive isn’t as important as contact info at all, but failing to teach it has still had broad negative effects on education and reading specifically

Cursive has several important well-studied developmental and cognitive benefits including reinforcing orthographic mapping in learning to read (reading being a significant weak area nationally at the moment) - it’s not just about the utility of reading handwritten texts per se

We’ve also seen the demise of Capitol Hill from a cultural hub to …. whatever it is now. Also the CD and ID. We don’t have the same spaces & places that could give rise to the next Northwest School or grunge or Quincy Jones or RSPT. You have to head out of town more for this: Bellingham, Spokane…

This is essentially a modern stacked take on a French/Breton longère, long narrow farmhouses originally but easily a 1,000 year tradition (some examples still exist in North America in Québec, Detroit, and New Orleans) - narrow properties can and do work very well!

At Decatur, there used to be a ticky-tacky white barracks laundry building that was in disrepair that preservationists tried to protect. Today it’s a green play area for the school. But honestly those preservationist people have no shame, they’re just chaos agents
