By 1929, the agrarian reform had radically transformed land tenure in Morelos. Whereas twenty-eight families owned three quarters of state's total surface in 1910, in 1930 over 20,000 families controlled the most productive soils. Some 208,500 hectares of lands were transferred to over 180 pueblos in the 1920s. In just ten years, then, the revolution redistributed close to half of the state's surface and practically all the fields in the richest valleys. These official figures, while not the most precise indicators of who commanded exactly which fields, nonetheless reflect the degree to which property ownership had been altered in rural Morelos. Figure 3 shows that "medium size landowners" were the major beneficiaries from 1910 to 1930, along with construction workers, the military, jornaleros, miners, and construction workers. The major losers of the period were hacendados, followed by small landowners and small businesses; merchants- financiers were also losers in this period. The distribution pattern had a slightly pro-equality profile, but not consistently so; we see for example that manufacturing workers were among the losers. As we have seen, the Gini co- efficient dropped by only four points, from 0.5708 to 0.5389. In relation to the Revolution, the most important equalizing factor appears to be the redistribution of land, which harmed the incomes of the hacendados. and benefited jornaleros and medium-size landowners. Scheidel (2017, pp. 241-242) cites the Mexican Revolution and its agrarian reform as a case of the importance of revolutionary violence for reductions in inequality; we agree that the reforms were crucial for reducing inequality, and see a large similarity in this process of political concessions to the lower classes, to the concessions to working class demands in European countries in the years of the First World War (cf. Scheve and Stasavage 2010). In Mexico, the peasants and the landless famously pushed for access to land, in movements led by Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata.
