I still don't really get your angle. I agree UCSD would admit fewer people who can't do math if they had SAT scores. There is a separate issue that K12 education is terrible. This report may be anecdata, but there's (ofc) no comprehensive data on how many kids graduate HS without knowing any math.

Still not really sure what your angle is here but surely a large fraction of incoming students being unable to do middle-school math is terrible, even if they didn't actually pass literal calculus?

I mean at many jobs, if person A completes their tasks 50% slower than person B, there's a real sense in which person B is more valuable to the firm (modulo some reasonable assumptions)? When you're done with a task you can move on to another one
