This is normal. It caused by excess alcohol (ethanol) due to underfeeding. Fix it by feeding more often, discarding most of the starter before feeding, and using whole wheat or rye flour. If it’s active, it’s still good!

Take out the top layer and feed it. It’s just very hungry and this is why there is a strong smell
