A lot of people see themselves that way, yes. I personally don't though, since that's just not something I grew up with.

I think give it long enough and people will begin to come around to the idea of American as an ethnicity as much as German is, but that's probably a long ways off

...pineapple on pizza and the superbowl doesn't make you American any more than natto and sumo wrestling make you Japanese. Still, pineapple pizza and the superbowl are a part of American culture in the same way that natto and sumo wrestling is a part of Japanese culture.

Being a part of a culture is multifaceted. American culture, broadly speaking, celebrates diversity and individuality. It encourages ambition, self-empowerment, and strong individual rights and freedoms. You can't succinctly boil down what makes an entire culture in one tweet, but...

That would mean that *no one* can be ethnically American, which is also not an idea I agree with
April 14, 2025 at 1:27 PM
IMO you could, if you felt attached to it. People can have multiple ethnicities.

E.g. someone can be all of Jewish, American, and Black and those are all perfectly valid ethnicities

I just don't like this idea that no one except the original indigenous inhabitants can be ethnically American
April 14, 2025 at 1:03 PM
Ethnicity is tied to culture

Unless you want to argue the alternative, I'd say "white" is not a culture in itself
April 14, 2025 at 12:48 PM
effectively anyone of any ancestral background who grew up in America, or even who immigrated where and assimilated in. Mexicans, Cubans, Irish, Chinese -- anyone from anywhere. That's the ideal of the Great Experiment. This shared belief system and cultural experience is what makes us American.
April 14, 2025 at 12:10 PM
My ethnicity is American. "White American" if someone *must* draw a distinction, but broadly I'd just go by American. I'd say the same thing for anyone who grew up in America, takes part in American culture, and holds what I believe to be fundamental American ideals. This would include...
April 14, 2025 at 12:07 PM
If this is your belief about ethnicity, then it's not about culture at all. It's purely about ancestral race. If that's how you view it and apply that definition consistently then that's fine, but it's not typically how the word is used academically, and I don't really like its deeper implications
April 14, 2025 at 12:03 PM
This is loser messaging btw, if you think telling every single non-indigenous American citizen that they aren't American is going to win people over then I have some very bad news for you
April 14, 2025 at 11:44 AM
Just realized the other guy blocked me lmao

Can't even engage with a level 1 question without hiding behind a block, actually pathetic

I align with you both politically almost entirely. I am extremely pro immigrant/immigration, and then I'm told I have effectively no ethnicity and get blocked
April 14, 2025 at 11:43 AM
Ah, so my ethnicity, which is defined by culture, is one in which I have no awareness of, did not grow up with, have never taken part in, and have no emotional attachment to.

Glad we settled on a totally coherent and reasonable definition there.
April 14, 2025 at 11:36 AM
Ethnicity is literally defined by culture. Saying you're "culturally X" but "not ethnically X" is getting into oxymoron territory. By this distinction, do I just have no ethnicity?
April 14, 2025 at 11:35 AM
So I just have no ethnicity then? Is that the argument?
April 14, 2025 at 11:33 AM
That was a reply to the other guy, not you, but you still didn't even answer my last question. If I'm not "American" then what am I?
April 14, 2025 at 11:27 AM
So you're saying that people like me have no ethnicity then? Or is my ethnicity just "white" and that's literally it?
April 14, 2025 at 11:24 AM
the fact that you can't even conceptualize someone who isn't aware of their ancestral background makes me feel like you are entirely unfit to even begin having this conversation
April 14, 2025 at 11:23 AM
Never knew my bio dad, my grandma would always give vague answers like "some mix of European" and that's about it

Mom and grandma are now gone, still no dad, any other extended family members are estranged or the type of people who I would rather not be in contact with.
April 14, 2025 at 11:22 AM
But also "when someone says that, they're claiming the 'irish' or 'jewish' for what the entire country should be as they see it" seems like a VERY strong statement that automatically assumes malicious intent

Like maybe that other guy *did* mean it maliciously, but I don't think it *must* mean that
April 14, 2025 at 11:10 AM
I'm a white man in America. I truly have no idea of my ancestral background at all, for a variety of reasons. I have never been DNA tested for it, either.

So am I just...no ethnicity? That can't be right. "White American?" I mean...I guess? Not very descriptive though, and it has its own problems
April 14, 2025 at 11:07 AM
But ultimately I'd be fine with anyone who grew up under american culture to call themselves ethnically American, regardless of their racial background or whatever
April 14, 2025 at 10:59 AM
"ethnicity" also refers to culture as much as, if not more than, physical "race" characteristics. feels like people will make fun of Americans for saying "oh I'm ethnically Irish" when they grew up exclusively in America, but people also say it's weird to be "ethnically American?"
April 14, 2025 at 10:58 AM
How long does America have to exist before it's fine to call someone ethnically American, though?

Like I doubt there's a huge amount of like "DNA difference" or something between a brit and a German, for example, but we wouldn't have a problem saying "ethnically english or ethnically german"
April 14, 2025 at 10:55 AM
not to be a bleeding heart loser but what the fuck kind of question is that in the first place

like what kind of genuine sociopath do you have to be to ask why you should care about other people
April 8, 2025 at 6:21 AM
Oh, apologies. I didn't realize they weren't open by default. I followed you back, they should all be good now
