In a 2012 speech at the Colorado Conservative Political Action Conference, Pearce told the audience that then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney would “reverse this trend of public ownership of lands” and turn over public lands to states or private entities. In a 2012 letter to Congress, Pearce advocated for selling off Bureau of Land Management lands to bring down the federal deficit. His attempts to sell off New Mexico’s public lands were a central issue when he ran for governor of New Mexico in 2018, and ultimately contributed to his loss to current Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. In at least one instance, Pearce encouraged a more confrontational approach to opposing federal land management and oversight in remarks he gave at a town hall in Eager, Arizona in 2011. In that speech, he urged counties to “take control” of all the land within their boundaries, including national public lands. At that same event, he reportedly praised counties in New Mexico and Oregon for “taking control,” including the Otero County, New Mexico sheriff who threatened to arrest any Forest Service staff interfering with the county’s logging on national forest land.

Using the rebranded "Department of War" acronym, "DoW," the 17-page document obtained by NPR outlining the new rules for the media says those who fail to obey the new policy will lose their press credentials — cutting off access to the headquarters of the largest department in the U.S. government. "DoW remains committed to transparency to promote accountability and public trust," the document said. "However, DoW information must be approved for public release by an appropriate authorizing official before it is released, even if it is unclassified."

According to a preliminary internal report circulated inside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, federal and local officials recovered ammunition with the shooter’s rifle that appeared to be engraved with statements “expressing transgender and anti-fascist ideology.” But a senior law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation cautioned that report had not been verified by A.T.F. analysts, did not match other summaries of the evidence, and might turn out to have been misread or misinterpreted. In fast-moving investigations, such status reports are not made public because they often contain a mixture of accurate and inaccurate information.

As these frontiersmen moved West, they found a land filled with Native American peoples. In many cases, these cowboys and their Native American brothers were cut from the same cloth. They were all independent, self-reliant, and held a deep respect for the land. The Indians of the Great Plains were known for their nomadic lifestyle, reliance of the buffalo, and rich cultural traditions.
