You could add the smell without it being super human a/b/o-ness. I adore books that include lots of sensory information. Caraval by Stephanie Garber or Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco. Both are 'New Adult' if you haven't read them. They read like YA but have a bit more mature content.
