H@m@S has agreed to return all the hostages. Since this is the only reason God’s special little flowers have been fighting (since 1948) I assume that they will all now withdraw to the land allocated to them in UN resolution 181. Because it’s only ever been about the hostages!

Political labels Referring to your recent correspondence on politics of the "left" and the "right" ', it's long been my opinion that these labels no longer provide a useful or accurate picture of the political scene. Many scholars have noted that what at first looks like a straight-line spectrum in the end appears as a circle, with little in practice to distinguish fascism from communism. We'd do better, I think, to speak of those who seek peace using peaceful means, and those who seek to destroy what they oppose, using violent means to achieve their ends. Many of the demonstrators in Melbourne's CBD over the past two years have sought peace, but some have clearly sought violent ends and have used the violence of flag burnings, rough behaviour, a refusal to engage in open discussion, celebration of acts of terrorism and the like to make their point. It is really of no consequence whether they call themselves, or are labelled by others, "left" or "right". The effects on our social fabric are the same. Some argue that the term "genocide" is too grave to apply while Israel's war continues. But the law is explicit: The obligation to prevent genocide arises the moment a serious risk is evident. That threshold was crossed long ago in this war. In January 2024 the International Court of Justice put all states on notice that there was a serious risk that genocide was being committed in Gaza. Since then, the evidence has only deepened, and the killing has multiplied. What does this mean for the international community? It means its obligations are not optional. Every state has an obligation to prevent genocide wherever it occurs. That obligation requires action: halting the transfer of weapons and military support used in genocidal acts, ensuring unimpeded humanitarian assistance, stopping the mass displacement and destruction, and using all available diplomatic and legal means to stop the killing. To do nothing is not neutrality. It is complicity.

Oh, for goodness sake! There is a difference between inciting violence against every trans woman who uses women’s bathrooms, and protesting genocide. These two things are not the same, Marina Hyde!
Before we go on, a quick word on that point. The UK isn't in the greatest place on free speech, and could do with a serious rethink on where its priorities lie. Or at least, a serious think about making it make sense. Take those who agree with the new Green party leader that it's entirely "proportionate" to arrest someone over tweets, but also reckon that Palestine Action has done nothing wrong. But also, take Farage himself, whining this week about the "really awful authoritarian situation" in the UK, while his underlings exacerbate it in a quite ludicrous piece of free-speech hypocrisy. We'll come to the full details of that in a minute. But you shouldn't be able to have it both ways - even if the lessons of the past decade might have suggested to people on both sides of politics that you can.

Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania just passed this. Antisemitism is wrong. Opposing the genocide in Gaza is not antisemitism.
Proposal 20 Non-Violent Anti-Genocide Action That the Synod resolves: a) That noting that groups including Amnesty International, B'Tselem, Defence for Children International, International Federation for Human Rights, Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Physicians for Human Rights Israel have all described Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide: To condemn antisemitic acts against the Jewish community in Australia, including the arson attacks on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea and the City Shul in Melbourne; ii. To condemn the mischaracterisation of non-violent anti-genocide action as antisemitic; iii. To encourage Uniting Church members in Victoria and Tasmania to engage in non-violent anti-genocide action, and iv. To write to the Prime Minister, the federal Leader of the Opposition, and the Premiers and Leaders of the Opposition in Victoria and Tasmania informing them of this resolution.

I just finished Ilan Pappe’s ‘Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic’ (2024) and it’s very good on the disjunction between UK society in general and UK politicians, and also on the way the Lobby got rid of Corbyn and celebrated Starmer.

As for the new leader of Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, the lobby could not hide its satisfaction. And the piece began with: New opposition chief immediately apologises to Jews for anti-Semitism in ranks, vows to “tear out this poison".

Goodness. Even if you accept that every so-called act of ‘anti-s3m1tism’ in Melbourne is that, and not anti-g3n0cide, imagine comparing them to the Christchurch Massacre. #LindaDessau is delusional.
She also said support for Muslim Australians after the September 11 terror attacks was stronger than the support for Jewish Australians today. "I know that Jewish Australians, as well as Australians from all different backgrounds, were very quick to ensure that Muslims didn't feel that they were being treated differently because of what had happened on September 11. "After [the mosque attacks in] Christchurch, we all stood shoulder to shoulder outside the [State] Library, and we all spoke in support of the Muslim community, and that we never wanted to see actions like that here - and yet it's happening ... It has to be stopped." Dessau said the Jewish community was afraid, and the way to reassure them was for police and political leaders to be "doing what needs to be done" to stop antisemitic behaviour.

Details of the brutal attack by Timothy John Trautsch and Nathan Black can now be revealed after their victim later died in unrelated circumstances, and the Herald and other news outlets launched a legal bid to reveal their misconduct. One officer told the woman she would be sectioned to Nepean Hospital. "I'm terrified of you people," the woman screamed. "You ain't got the drugs to fix me, you ain't got the drugs to put me out. You can't beat me... that gun is not going to help you." The woman began running as Black and Trautsch gave chase and tackled her on the road. She was sitting cross-legged, praying for God's protection, as one of the officers fired pepper, or OC, spray into her face and vagina. The woman, covered in her own excrement and spray, washes herself in the gutter. Black periodically turned his camera on and off, with another clip capturing the officers laughing. "Wash your c--, wash your arse, wash it out," Black is heard saying on the video. "What the fuck is going on." At one point, Black's camera drops to the ground, showing only the road and a telegraph pole, as the woman screams in the background, calls out in prayer and pain. Black and Trautsch, in the confrontation, drag the woman across the road by her hair and repeatedly kick her in the face, body and head. At one point they spray her visibly grazed back with more pepper spray as she rolls on the ground. "That's enough, there could be cameras," Trautsch warns Black at one point. Black launched a workers' compensation claim against NSW Police, saying he had been deeply traumatised by witnessing multiple decapitations and deaths on the job and was not supported by his bosses. The court previously heard that Trautsch had also made a workers' compensation claim. Doctors told the compensation court that Black had sustained a liver infection because of the woman's bodily fluids entering his bloodstream as she bit and attacked the officers. The commission held that Black must be paid during his suspension and was diagnosed with PTSD which predated his attack on the woman. "It would seem that the actions of the vulnerable female caused Mr Black to lose all control and act in an uncharacteristic and egregious way which have brought consequences for him that are ruinous to his career," the commission found.
