the whole Airborn series by Kenneth Oppel -- steampunk adventure in airships w/ pirates and scientific discovery! Nation by Pratchett is also a great stand alone that I think is meant for younger readers

the first two are fantasy -- the arkadians has greek mythology/magic vibes. really wonderful. also, Ronia, the Robber's Daughter by Astrid Lindgren!

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede are wonderful -- a princess tired of princessing takes herself off to a dragon to be captured, has delightful time. The Arkadians by Lloyd Alexander is a favorite that I think is even better than Prydain. Ofc Anne of Green Gables and the Penderwicks
