New paper for #SLPeeps, which suggests that sentence repetition, nonword repetition, a parental questionnaire, and a task measuring semantic and morphosyntactic comprehension contribute the most to identifying DLD in bilingual children. #DevLangDis
Study addresses the challenge of identifying #DLD in bilingual children. This language assessment protocol successfully combines time efficiency w/ high accuracy to diagnose DLD; it's a useful, feasible protocol for SLPs. pubs.asha.org/doi/10.1044/...

Want an early spring bloomer? American plum (Prunus americana) is a native tree that brightens the landscape with its white blooms. Compared to its invasive lookalike, Callery pear, it has a sweet scent and is a keystone species--a host for over 300 caterpillar species.

With falling NAEP scores & research showing that sentence writing is essential to reading growth, let's give students a change to perform at a higher level - even if they are struggling with decoding. Yes, writing success can motivate struggling readers!

A former French military base, Vauban is a thriving neighbourhood of 5,500 residents connected to Freiburg town centre by bus and light rail. Built in the late 1990s as a radical experiment in low-car living, it forgoes virtually all on-street parking in favour of active, green, and social spaces. 🧵

ICYMI, 🦋 #bskySPEECHIES #devlangdis #childspeechdis #SLCN Parents aren’t too lazy to talk to their children, explains a #teacher: “They care so much about their children, but their priority is meeting their basic needs. They are working incredibly hard just to keep them clothed and fed and safe.”
Two-thirds of children at risk of exclusion have speech and communication needs. My @london-vru.bsky.social is addressing this with oracy interventions in primary school.

In just one year, it has led to 98% of children narrowing the gap to their peers and 60% meeting vocabulary standards.

The snow today puts me in mind of one of the funnest and hardest studies my lab in Iowa did (during a winter when windchill kept closing schools!). This line of work on 'using a hook' to get people to use specific sentence types kicked off a line of work on embedding syntax in different contexts.

A handy chart posted by ASHA on that other site. As a school-based SLP, these gains are not surprising to me, but might be useful in illustrating to other stakeholders the impact an SLP can have on classroom performance.
