This #NationalBirdDay, we’re spreading awareness about the millions of birds suffering in captivity due to the exotic pet trade. Birds should not be kept as pets—even captive-bred birds retain wild behaviors and instincts that cause them to languish in captivity.

In 2023, the USDA began requiring certain breeders and exhibitors to be licensed and inspected and to meet minimum care standards, including providing psychological enrichment for birds. However, smaller-scale breeders are largely exempt, leaving thousands of birds unprotected.

You can take action for birds by discouraging your friends and family from purchasing birds as pets, learning more from @avianwelfare.bsky.social, and by asking your legislators to support efforts to protect and conserve wild bird species. #CancelCages #MoreBeautifulWild
