I studied behavioral science/music/video game history. I try to explore the intersections of these fields on my Youtube channel. I also do game preservation.

I spent a while making a new video on game inserts, what they are, why you should care about them, and the fleeting relationship they fostered between fans and companies. Check it out!

Hi! I’ve been posting some short videos to highlight the preservation work I do and hopefully draw some more interest to these more niche topics in video game history. My latest is on a (likely) experimental Donkey Kong Country promotion: Banana Bucks!

Sukeban Shachou Rena – the worst selling Wii game of all time, with approximately 100 copies sold in 2 weeks. It was the last game ever produced by Jourdan.

The cat pictured, Rena, was the mascot of a popular blog entitled Nekopunch. She also has her own Twitter page! x.com/renawii?s=21

My biggest complaint about Pikmin 4, as of 95% completion, is the direction that the soundtrack went in. I understand that certain Nintendo published open world games have been increasingly pushing the boundaries on the definition of the word “soundtrack.” BOTW very notably drew a ton of backlash at

Donkey Kong banana bucks advertisement with extremely rare deposit certificate from Bradlees (a defunct retailer as of 2001, for those who don’t know.) While there were never physical “Banana Bucks,” as it was just an order form where you tracked purchases, these coupons are close!

In light of Pikmin 4 being awesome, here’s a neat little mail away pamphlet from Nintendo Power making a convincing case for their readers to buy Pikmin 1. Not only does it have a $5 off coupon, but it also includes a thorough intro to the story, a developer interview, enemy info, and silly renders!

I have a lot of projects I’m currently working on, but I do really want to post some of my ideas on here! There aren’t a whole lot of spaces I can discuss old games, their history, their impacts, etc. in my real life, so hopefully I can curate something here. While I do collect, I’ve struggled to

I know people talk about box set a whole lot, but I really think that game spines are so neat. The design shifts from generation to generation give a shelved collection different personalities, while generally remaining identifiable as being under a certain console. Case study: GBA games.

In other news, if you don’t know who ROB is, or want to learn more about your favorite NES peripheral, watch my two parter on every single game that featured ROB! Which is two!
Gyromite: ROB, the Trojan Horse | Unpacking Nintendo's Black Boxes – Episode #8
ROB may have snuck the NES into toy stores, but he also managed to sneak his way into our hearts. Gyromite is also a pretty fun game. Let's talk about both! ...

I’ve been getting frustrated at a lot of video game “essays” I’ve been listening to on Youtube lately. While I fully admit that my stuff has been maybe a bit *too* academic in nature, I have done my best to produce content that brings a new discussion to the table, is transformative from previous

Instead of being wrapped in cellophane, early NES games were sealed with a Nintendo sticker. In 1985, they used dull matte stickers, and in ‘86 they used shinier, gloss ones. Other than the texture and look, this change was likely made to include text on the underside of the sticker that reads void.

Now Waluigi’s Taco Stand is an N64 game that aged phenomenally well
June 13, 2023 at 11:26 PM
Smash Bros. kicked off a distinctly iconic franchise. It’s also aged significantly better than many other N74 games. Why?

The focus on 2D environments with 3D models may make it look clunky compared to modern fighting games, but the controls and mechanics hold up extremely well.

I’ve completely forgot to post, but I’m putting out weekly videos looking at the history/impact of the NES Black Box set. I released Baseball last week. The sports games might not be super interesting but they’re still important! Check it out if you have a few minutes (and also watch the other ones)
Baseball: The NES Enters the Big Leagues | Unpacking Nintendo's Black Boxes – Episode #03
NES Baseball is the first actual game in this series. I chose to start with Baseball, even though all 1985 games bar Super Mario (maybe) came out at the same time, for two reasons: it was the first game released for the Nintendo Vs. System in America, meaning it was technically the first black box game Americans ever experienced, and it comes first alphabetically. Nonetheless, it is a great starting point of our journey – many of the hallmarks of Nintendo sports titles (Mario-ification, accessible controls, etc.) are discussed here. It's a nice home base to build off of. I’m looking for advice.

I’m graduating from UChicago in a couple weeks with a double major in psychology and music, and a minor in media arts and design (which boils down to video game history/design). I don’t have any solid plans yet – I’ve just kinda been shotgun applying to everything that

I’m unfortunately unable to post pictures, so I beg the audience to imagine this:

a photo of Goose the Dog (a creature featured in my first post on this app) next to ROB, the Robotic Operating Buddy, a peripheral toy for the NES. Goose is looking at ROB and sniffing it incredulously. It is cute.

Fun fact: the first printing of Mega Man for the NES asks “Will you and Mega Man penetrate the seven separate societies of Dr. Wright and preserve the human race?”

Dr. Wright is the scientist that created Mega Man, and Dr. Wily is the one that you have to defeat. Needless to say it got fixed asap.

Hi! I’m Avery! I study video game history in undergrad (and psychology and music, but that’s not important) and am very excited to begin Posting for the first time in a while.

I talk about game history on Youtube (https://youtube.com/@averybeckett) and can’t wait to start doing so on here too!

Welcome! I make videos of varying length on a myriad of different topics, primarily related to video games. Expect video essays, random one-off topics, extensive deep dives into game and console histories, and various collection videos. I study video game design and history in university, so don’t be surprised if some works are more academic than others. I guess since this is an ice breaker here’s a fun fact: my pupils are different sizes. Hope to see ya around!
