Oh I totally understand you. I played it in my early twenties for the first time and had same problem. But i was in my retro binge to play games i missed as a child and maybe didnt feel that too much

You had the same feeling about metal gear.
And I agree. A lot of it stems about the time when it was played, innovation, limits and now nostalgia.

I liked it quite a bit myself. A bit rough around the edges, but wasnt bad at all. Even the isekai part made sense compared to some other animes.
