- It was called a questing beast because it supposedly resembled the sound of hunting dogs ("questing")
- It was said to poison water by drinking it, hence the typing
- Its shifting of its rear and hind in its evolution represents the Saracen Palamedes converting to Christianity

Gardezere is based off of Lady Guinevere
- Guinevere was known to be a master at chess (five-point crown, "'gardez" = 'check' but for the queen)
- Interpreted as either traitorous (adultery = morally bad) or misunderstood (courtly love instead of dalliance)
