It's a thought-terminating cliche meant to make it easy to dismiss people with real concerns about the threat that Authoritarianism is to America.
My main goal in life is to offer the term "Autocratic Despair" as a less judgemental substitute that might make it easier to recognize how bad this is.

Could not agree more. TDS is a rather insidious trick of language in that it is meant to portray people with real anxiety & concerns about Authoritarianism in the USA as mentally ill or unable to properly evaluate a threat.
