Black History Month is a time to celebrate the history of Black people in the United States. Black people have many historical achievements that are often less recognized or celebrated. This month is meant to highlight and celebrate these achievements. Black History Month occurs every February. This month is a good time to learn about Black historical figures. Black History Month is important to everybody. Everyone should learn about and celebrate Black history. Black disabled history is especially important to ASAN. Black disabled leaders have often been erased or ignored. Many disability rights leaders have been Black disabled people. Also, many well known Black historical leaders, such as Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, were disabled. But their disabilities are often not mentioned or remembered. Today, January 23rd, is Ed Roberts Day. Ed Roberts was a disabled activist who is considered to be the father of the Independent Living movement. ASAN celebrates Ed Roberts’ legacy today and everyday through our work.

Today we commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We recognize the interconnectedness of the histories and struggles of the civil rights movement and the disability rights movement. ASAN uplifts MLK’s legacy and contributions as we continue to work towards a more just and inclusive world for all.

The Autism Campus Inclusion (ACI) Leadership Academy is a project of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN). ACI helps Autistic students learn to make their college campuses better for people with disabilities. ACI participants learn about making student groups, understanding disability policy, and talking to people in power. After the Academy, students get help from ASAN to meet their advocacy goals at their college. To commemorate World AIDS Day and the impact AIDS has on our communities, this post has some parts of our plain language resource about HIV and AIDS. Orange and white textured gradient background. Text reads: What is HIV? HIV is a germ that makes it hard for your body to fight other germs. HIV kills off the parts of your body that fight off germs. This can make it very easy to get sick. Without treatment, people with HIV often get sick with diseases that people without HIV can fight off easily. Without treatment, people with HIV can easily die of diseases that do not make people without HIV very sick. How can you get HIV? Sex: HIV is an STI. This means you can get HIV through having sex. Sharing needles: by sharing needles, syringes, and other injection supplies with other people who have HIV if you inject drugs. During pregnancy: pregnant people who have HIV can give HIV to their fetus if they are not on HIV medication. While breastfeeding: breastfeeding people who have HIV can give HIV to their babies if they are not on medication. Orange and white textured gradient background. Text reads: What is AIDS? AIDS is a disease caused by HIV. When HIV gets inside your body, the HIV germs kill off certain cells in your body. These cells are called CD4 cells. CD4 cells help your body fight off germs. If a person with HIV does not get proper medication and treatment, the HIV germs will keep killing off CD4 cells. If a person’s CD4 cell count gets too low, the person can get very sick. If a person has HIV and their CD4 cell count gets too low, that person has AIDS. People with AIDS can get very sick. Not everyone with HIV has AIDS. People with HIV can take medication to stop themselves from getting AIDS. The best way to prevent HIV from causing AIDS is to test for HIV. That way, if someone has HIV, they will know they have HIV. Using a condom or other barrier method is a good way to help prevent HIV and other STIs. Both internal and external condoms can help prevent you from getting or giving someone HIV. Dental dams and gloves can also help prevent you from getting or giving someone HIV. PrEP. PrEP is short for “pre-exposure prophylaxis.” “Prophylaxis” means “prevention.” “Pre-exposure” means “before you are exposed” to HIV. PrEP is a medication you take regularly to prevent getting HIV. PrEP can make your chance of getting HIV smaller, even if you do not use condoms. PEP. PEP is short for “post-exposure prophylaxis.” “Prophylaxis” means “prevention.” “Post-exposure” means “after you are exposed” to HIV. PEP can make your chance of getting HIV smaller. You take PEP after you might have been exposed to HIV.

To get ready for the hearing, people who work for Senators on the Committee are collecting stories from people with disabilities. These stories will help Senators understand why services that help us be independent are important. Your story could help Senators make important policy choices. Today, November 20th, is Trans Day of Remembrance, a day meant to honor the memory of trans people who were lost to transphobic violence. We remember and mourn for those we’ve lost, and will continue to work towards a world without transphobic violence.

The head of the Department of Education is Secretary MacMahon. Secretary MacMahon said she wants to keep working on getting rid of the Department of Education. The White House also said that the U.S. does not need the Department of Education anymore. They said the Department of Education doesn’t actually help students get services. They said that “nothing happened” to students during the government shutdown, so getting rid of parts of the Department of Education is okay. That’s why the White House thinks they can move some offices out of the Department of Education. But the White House is wrong.

Alice was a powerhouse — her impact on the world, on disability justice, on so many of us at ASAN, cannot be overstated." Alice was a friend, an ally, a mentor, a force to be reckoned with, and now she is a disabled ancestor. In 2023, Alice was the awardee of ASAN's Harriet McBryde Johnson Award for Nonfiction for her book Year of the Tiger, and ongoing work on the Disability Visibility Project. She also spoke at ASAN's 2019 Gala, reflecting on action and community in a way that still rings true today. "So, why do we want to take action? For me, it’s because I care deeply about a lot of things and I want to create change. What do you care about? Maybe it’s public transit, horrible sidewalks, climate change, or gentrification.…And your view of the world is unique and invaluable, no matter what others may say." Alice Wong, ASAN Gala 2019. "Personally, I am exhausted from fighting against eugenics and social inequality, especially in the middle of this pandemic that made things worse for the disability community and other marginalized groups. Where is the justice? How do we keep going on against overwhelming forces that do not want us to exist, such as ableism, capitalism, and white supremacy? I wish I had the answers, but I know that I am not alone. We are living in truly difficult and extraordinary times. Now, more than ever, we need to share space, mourn, and remember together." Protect, love, and care for one another — wear a mask, protect the most vulnerable of us, and keep fighting against a world that tells us we are not worth fighting for.
