Many Autistics, and many ADHDers, need more rest for our nervous systems to be able to process the sensory information that we’re taking in, the social information we’re taking in, to be able to regulate, and to really actually feel rested.

Instead of, “I can’t take the plunge without absolute certainty it will work out,” what if it’s “I must take the plunge?” What if accepting uncertainty is why I must do it, because I need that personal growth?

If you want some neurodivergent and neuro-positive book recommendations, here are my favorites, ranging from fiction, to sensory advice, to autobiographies, to ways to dissolve internalized ableism.

You can find all of them at: buff.ly/txLTwqA

Physical sensations and thought always go together. We may not always pay attention to both of those, but we can connect them. When we notice one of them, we can look for the information from the other.

Other people trying to meet our needs is good. It’s wonderful when they can do that, when they can be supportive in that way. But it’s not always possible. And if it’s not possible, that doesn’t mean that they don’t love us.

For many of us, it’s really hard to know what we want, or even acknowledge that we have wants (especially when wanting has been very thoroughly trained out of us), but I guarantee you that you have wants.

Is it rude for Autistics to spend holidays in their room? Or opts out, instead of being with the family? Is it promoting bad behavior? Is it showing acceptance and accommodation? And how do you explain it to family members? Here are my thoughts on these ideas.

When we try to just “get over it”, we don’t learn how to deal with our own internal reactions to things in a more positive, useful way. All of the intensity just gets stored up and we brace ourselves against it.

You have decades of information stored in your body about what’s okay and what’s not.

A lot of us have been conditioned, often unintentionally but still very heavily, to deny aspects of our own experience.

Agreed. This is related to what I was talking about in my recent video on why finding your autistic community didn't fix your loneliness.

If you haven't seen this recent video yet, it's about the uncomfortable situation where you find a group of #Autistic and #AuDHD humans, and still don't feel comfortable around them, and/or there's just as much drama as among NT groups. Here's my take on why that happens.

Today the soap in a public bathroom made my hands smell like stale Play-Doh for hours. Ugh. I could smell it strongly even with my hands stretched far away from me. Sensory nightmare.

Had to wash several times when I got home to get most of the smell off.

Getting to where you are now took a long time, and lots of different kinds of experiences (both negative and positive), which means that there are a bunch of different parts of you that are crying out to be heard and to be treated with respect and compassion.
