“Welcome to Clucky Chucky's Chicken Bucky, what can I get started for you today?” A voice squawked through the speaker box. “Let me get a large number five with fried mushrooms and a sweet iced tea,” Dameon replied. “Anything else today?” The voice asked. “No, that should do it,” Dameon replied. “That will be …SQUELCH… at the second window,” the voice responded. Dameon pulled forward and waited while the driver ahead of him completed his transaction. They really need to fix that squawk box, Dameon mused. The window attendant handed them their food and they pulled off. Dameon pulled forward. “Large number five, fried mushrooms and a sweet iced tea, that will be fifteen-thirty-nine, please,” the teen window attendant said. Dameon smiled and handed them his card. “How’s your day going?” Dameon asked. “Clucktastic, and yours?” They replied. “Wonderful,” Dameon responded. “Here’s your card, would you like any sauce today?” They asked. “Not today, I appreciate it though,” Dameon replied. “Great, and here’s your food and your ice-tea. Have a clucking good day!” They smiled. “You too,” Dameon laughed. He double checked his order as he pulled away from the window, pulling a deep fried mushroom out of the box and popping it in his mouth. He devoured his chicken sandwich. And he picked at the side, as he drove to his next stop. The dry cleaners. When he arrived, he encountered a lengthy line of customers.

While he was trying to figure out how to save Chief Busbee, the firehouse speakers clicked on. Dameon ignored it at first, then the screaming started. Chief Busbee’s cries of pain were being amplified over the station’s PA system, to the point they traveled a couple of blocks in any given direction, allowing his screams to reach the innocent ears of the neighborhood.

Lets see how all this magic works, Dameon thought. He looked around as if he expected Father Sean to appear over his shoulder and scold him for using dark magic. “What was it Àrd said?” Dameon asked himself. It's the intent that matters the most? He recalled. “If that's true,” he pondered. His intent was to traverse the path with greater speed and efficiency. Dameon focused on getting to Cleon’s cabin as quickly and safely as possible. “Jörð,” Dameon whispered. The moment his foot hit solid ground the primal energy surrounded his steps. The sensation was like greeting an old friend you had never met before, familiar but foreign. This would take some getting used to, he thought. Dameon almost collapsed after a couple short and shaky steps. He felt like a newborn taking their first steps, except this was a mountain trail not his mother’s living room. Lord, guide my steps, he thought. With his eyes closed, he reached out with his mind, felt the currents in the ethereal energy, and took another step. This time he moved with the energy, rather than against it. Dameon found himself travelling at a greatly increased speed.

The neck dipped down into her cleavage, which was covered in purple velvet lace with little pearlescent beads in three chevrons that pointed downwards following the curvature of her bosom. The dark silk hung just below her knees. In her hand, she held a tiny purse and hat.

Deep in the Blackwoods, his partner was chasing his lifelong obsession. A killer who would do anything to escape. The forest was not a place for the weak. Everyone in Greenvale knew of the dangers that lay within. Even Dameon, an accomplished survivalist, gave those shadows a wide berth. Yet, he bolted into those woods twelve hours ago.

I flipped the top slice of bread on top, sliced them diagonally, licked the knife clean and placed it in the sink. I placed a handful of chips on the plates between the wedges, before closing the mayo jar and placing it back in the fridge. I placed the two plates, cup of coffee, and a bottle of water onto a carrying tray and headed back upstairs. On my way past the stack of books, one of many, I grabbed a well-loved copy of Stephen King’s IT. It seemed that all those years of waitressing paid off, I thought. I placed the tray on the dinner stand, next to Dameon’s bed. Book in hand I sank back into the chair and let the first few seconds of luxury relax me. I turned to look at Dameon, his hand was just outside the covers. I reached for it and opened the novel. I smiled at his chilly touch, happy to share my warmth with him. I read aloud, just loud enough for Dameon to hear. Images of a young Tim Curry came to mind, with his face covered in white makeup, frizzy red hair, a crimson nose, bloodshot eyes, and razor-sharp teeth.
