in the novel i’ve queried for years, the friendship between the two female leads is the heart of the story. the moments where the stakes and the drama fall away, where they’re just two teenage girls joking around, are my absolute favorite to write. someday i hope they’re someone’s favorite to read!

i can’t help but notice that inej and nina, the female crew members, are not part of it. inej and nina are close, supportive, and caring, but they don’t get these silly lighthearted moments together. this is just one example, but i want to see more women being silly and FUNNY.

male characters engage in. women are funny! women joke around and tease and have silly, stupid jokes. one example i always come back to is in six of crows (a book i love) wherein the 4 male characters of the crew have a moment of silly banter about their ghosts. it’s a silly moment, but
