Arranging the ritual took time. The circle of sea salt, covering the hardwood bedroom floor. A folded t-shirt, one of the last ones he wore, softly prickled with black dog hairs and the rotary phone from his office resting on top. Music in these things was always optional, but for this circle, for her dad, it was necessary. Jules slipped a crackling record on the turntable, one of his Zeppelin albums. Sprawled on her bed, Yorick groaned and laid his head on his paws. As the witching hour neared, she lit a scattering of balsam candles about the room, broke a razor free of its plastic moorings and made a small shallow cut above the tattoo on the inside of her bony left wrist. The music ended as she flicked her blood into the guttering flames, and she waited in the silence, the magic’s tidal pull roiling around her. The phone rang. Yorick groaned again as Jules reached across the circle to pick it up, kneeling on the floor. “Hi Dad,” she said.

But her uncle’s spirit hasn’t settled the way it’s supposed to, and will not content itself with shore-bound business. Her uncle’s spirit insists, angrily, that it was not just a storm that killed him and wrecked his ship, not a rogue wave; it was an unthinkably large monster. Then his lover comes knocking with news of an adult son who has set sail along the same shipping lane, and dead uncle and living niece must work together to save a son neither of them knew existed.
