In the book, I parallel those two black holes with the story of two children meeting in a meadow to say goodbye, because one of them is about to move away. As they dance in the meadow and promise to stay connected, the gravitational waves from the dancing black holes reach the Earth and touch them.

Ugh. Looks like trillions was a typo or outright error on the part of whoever composed the item. (They ran it by me first, too, and I should have read it more carefully.) The story itself says "a billion," approximating the 1.3 billion year old event that the LIGO observatory detected in 2015.
