It helped a lot to do that but it's challenging to find how to translate that outside of writing courses

That's a great point and something I've thought a lot about. I had a writing professor in undergrad who addressed this very well. Unlimited revise/resubmit attempts and progressively larger grading emphasis as semester went on. (First assignment 5%, next 10%, etc.)
