i care a lot about systems. in particular, systems of technology, media, education, and governance. fighting for liberatory schools, for creators, and for a free and open internet.

still crazy to me that there is like zero discourse about the TikTok ban coming Saturday.

any pointers to places where threat modeling is happening?

iirc, core Bluesky design goals are (1) composable moderation (2) global feed, and (3) portable data/accounts.

(2) seems to be the unique thing culturally!

on the how that underlies the what:

i will say — my big takeaway from ATmosphere was a fascination with the community’s interest in the Big Thing.

on the other hand, Google Search was actually displaying copied photos. is it meaningful that the AI industry isn’t?

he is saying that the slow motion look changes my perception of what that point is, and i disagree.

i am asking him to prove me wrong here! how does slow motion affect the "reality of the moment", as he puts it?

if so, you must agree that there is a point at which it becomes unrealistic to call something an "attempt to play".

the question, which he and i disagree on, is what that point is.

for those that are seeing jeff’s replies here: consider this –

i’m asking how it changes the nature of his attempt.

for example, if Sharangovich was waving his stick in the air while looking at the puck from the far hash mark, would you say that he is making an "attempt" at the play?

no?

sorry, to be clear: i’m asking how it changes the nature of his attempt.

for example, if Sharangovich was waving his stick in the air while looking at the puck from the far hash mark, would you say that he is making an "attempt" at the play?

no?

curious: is incidental contact limited to stick-on-goalie?
February 3, 2025 at 6:22 PM
how did it change the reality of this moment?
February 3, 2025 at 6:20 PM
finally, curious about how Schwartz’s goal could be considered different. there is a rebound, both players are attempting to play the puck, Schwartz wins the battle, and nets it.
February 3, 2025 at 4:02 AM
if you *do* consider this an “attempt” on a loose puck, then i’m not sure what the goalie interference call is for. joey makes this save if his stick is not lifted, or if he is not moved out of the way when his glove is pushed.

another angle showing how far behind the puck is.
February 3, 2025 at 3:59 AM
not sure how you can faithfully say Sharangovich is attempting to play the puck here. he’s a yard in front of it and makes direct contact with Joey’s stick (and then glove). he’s nowhere near to making a play on the puck, so it would be miraculous to call this an attempt, in my opinion.
