There's also common threads linking WW2 to Vietnam to the GWOT. Fascism is replaced by communism replaced by the "impending threat of Islam." There's also the idea of the US arriving and "liberating" areas under the control of the oppressive regimes.

Could that be a byproduct of the interconnected nature of the wars in the 20th century? Because the events of one war set the stage for the next since WWI, and so the memory of each war flows into the next with relative ease.
