Earendel is 12.9 billion years old, and it was only born 900 million years after the Big Bang. we can only see it because of the magnification present around the edge of a black hole, and it’s incredibly redshifted because it’s moving away from us. the light we see now is the ghost of a star.

it’s the farthest known star in our universe!! for reference the previous title for the farthest star was about 14 billion light years away from us, and Earendel (WHL0137-LS) is a stunning 28 billion light years away. its name in old english is “dawn star” because it’s from the dawn of the universe.
