The 12th President, Zachary Taylor, ate copious amounts of cherries and iced milk on July 4, 1850. Over the course of several days, he became extremely sick and died four days later from gastroenteritis. The source of the infection is up for debate.

Louis Pasteur invented pasteurization in 1862.
