You sound exactly like a few professors I studied under. Jefferson was discussed, at length. Even in 1963 we were talking about this. People then were taught in primary school that he was a great man.

Actual historian here. It's called presentism and most of us warn against using modern day laws, values, or morality to judge a person's actions from other eras. Was he a piece of shit? Today's values would say absolutely yes. In his time, no, not remotely. Have times changed? Trump is President.

I was a senior in high school & working in my spare time in opposition to Barry Goldwater over his lack of support the Civil Rights Act. The news came over the loudspeaker and we were sent home shortly thereafter. Glued to the TV and Walter Cronkite. My father armed everyone in the house for weeks.

Ive been around for almost 80 years. Nearly my entire adult life Arabs & Israel have been at war. A broken US brokered ceasefire is a foregone conclusion.
