The Russians getting caught out like this says a lot about how poorly trained/equipped they are. Semi-autonomous weapons platforms like this were being developed over 20 years ago. (In case somebody wonders - I know because I worked on them.)

The "hunger games' approach does work to reduce the luck and connection factors, the UC system in CA is a good example, but you end up with a lot of suicides.

I think this is most of it: Donald Trump is one of the best conmen in the history of the world. The coalition he has brough together is truly remarkable: oligarchs, grifters, racists, misogynists, and knuckle-draggers. All of them are quite confident in their belief that "he cares about me".

Were you exercising them regularly? They definitely won't last very long if they are just sitting on a shelf. Not good if they get a little too warm either. (I was one of the LTO designers at HP Labs.)

Not always true (thanks Marc), but a good (safe) place to start: Never underestimate the ability of a lawyer to rationalize anything and everything. It is a big part of what enables many of them to sleep at night.
