It’s just weird to have it out of the family when it’s been there my whole life and now I’m left to mourn it on the other side of the country after finding out about it in a Facebook post.

All this feeling over gas station in a town I haven’t visited in 2 years.

Don’t get me wrong, I get why the sold it and don’t blame them at all.

They’re getting older and are already slowly passing the accounting firm down to my uncle.

The store still had analog gas pumps and the register was 30 years old. It needed a lot keep going.

It was the right decision.

Just about everyone in my family worked there at one point or another, a lot of times as their first jobs. The only reason I didn’t was that we moved away right before I started high school.

All of my cousins and even my mom at one point did their time helping out.

One year a woman from out of town came in and tried to rob the store for gas for her car. The police showed up and arrested her in front of our tent, and then apologized to my parents for my little sister and I having to see it. They then bought some of the banned fireworks from us.

Around the 4th of July, we used to sell (definitely not legal) fireworks out of a tent that we set up outside the entrance of the gas station. I think my Dad used to drive into Tennessee where the firework bans were more lax and then bring them back to sell. About everyone in town stopped each year.

On the weekends we’d go by to rent a movie and my parents would sometimes let me rent a PS2 game as well. I would almost always rent Spirited Away and Megaman X8.

Ghibli movies later became one of the key things that I bonded with my now wife over when we first met. I never finished X8.

They also own the accounting firm beside the gas station, which my mom also worked at.

I’d regularly get off the bus there and walk over to grab two slices of supreme pizza and an orange Frostie or A&W cream soda.. Then I’d walk back to the office and played on my DS till Mom finished working.

I say gas station, but it was a lot of things.

They sold food too; some home cooked food along with simple burgers and Hunt Brothers Pizza. They had Slush Puppies (think off brand Icee) and this lesser known soda brand called Frostie.

They also did movie rentals when that was still a thing.
