*in the spirit of openness, I should point out that while I didn't try that particular thing again, I did try eating an entire pound of fudge a few weeks after that. Did you know you can get a hangover from fudge? My teens were not big on common sense.

The cynicism I've been fighting an increasingly losing battle against for the last couple of decades has me guessing this is more about "what position will get me, personally more money from PACs and large corporations" than "what position will win the most votes."

My guess is that one is a mostly conscious activity (I'm constantly paying attention to where traffic might be coming from) and one is muscle memory. (I learned to drive stick 40 years ago and have rarely had to think about it since)

Or my brain just likes to annoy me. (this is definitely true)
