This is the Black Sails fandom for me. With very few exceptions, it’s been a safe harbor for me.

I’m a former English major and theatre actress and IT PAYS OFF! I promise.

It’s a blending of reality and fiction which, in the end, is one of the statements of the series.

The show started out with a wrestling match for control between the studio executives and the creators, with the creators eventually winning out and being freed up for competing with GoT to tell the story they wanted to tell HOW they wanted to tell it. That starts around episode 7.

You honestly aren’t supposed to know what’s going on yet. It’s a show that rewards a patient viewer with a story that pays back your investment with interest. You seem knowledgeable, and so you are, in fact, the target audience for this series. I would say to have faith.

By the end of the series it all seems just incredibly beautifully constructed. The historical pirates rubbing elbows with fictional pirates just doesn’t matter in the end because this is a story about stories and who tells the story and who controls the narrative.

As I said, it’s not bad dramaturgy if you’re familiar with Treasure Island and watch more than 4 episodes of the series.

Because Robert Louis Stevenson did it with Treasure Island. 😉 Israel Hands was a real pirate, mashed up with fictional ones.
