Little Red Barns: Hiding the Truth from Farm to Fable by Will Potter
The book open to a page that reads: “Each barn on the farm has a different purpose. One contains the stories of animals, as we’ve seen. Others hold stories of nationalism, capitalism, family, gender, race, and more. Each barn is full to the brim of with its own weaponized stories, hidden and out of sight. The story of the farm is what brings all these stories together in the same vivid continuous dream. When we think of the little red barn, we don’t just think of structure. We think of an entire way of life. As small farms are replaced by factory farming, and as the rhetoric of the far right grows increasingly fascistic and violent, the little red barns ground their weaponized stories in a place that is familiar and safe. The little red barn is used to hide what’s happening, but also to restrict our imagination of what else is possible. The farm never changes, and we are kept in the vivid continuous dream of what was.”

“The New Abolitionists took over the rhetorical force of abolition and channeled it into the cause of an, which is to say, the white slave. In 1875, Congress accordingly passed the Page Act, mounting a defense of vulnerable womanhood and a vindication of female dignity, and banning the “importation into the United States of women for the purposes of prostitution. The Page Act was the very first law limiting who could come and inhabit the settler-colonial republic, and it was a feminist law. Critical legal theorist Lorelei Lee recounts how quickly and inevitably this politics fused with xenophobic nationalism: ‘Even as the Black Codes and subsequent Jim Crow laws reinstituted a racialized system of forced labor that continues to this day, white Americans told themselves that the country had entered a new age of freedom that was now under threat from Chinese immigration. Chinese women who worked in gold rush-era brothels in California were, claimed one reformer, “infusing a poison into the Anglo-Saxon Blood.’ The hunch that nativist and eugenic motivations were firmly on top here is confirmed by the Chinese Exclusion of 1882, which banned all Chinese people coming in (again on the pretext of ending ‘yellow slavery’).”
