I love sandbox play. You never know how things will develop and what will players do. You do need to have at least a few proactive players that do wish to impact the world, otherwise they will feel like the world is happening to them instead.

Swords & Wizardry Complete (OD&D retroclone). Open table means many players over the years. Two highest level PCs at the moment are a Cleric (8th) and Fighter (7th). PCs seized control of a kingdom and everything is falling apart, mostly due to their actions.

Not if everyone plays with a stable of characters. What adventure/expedition gets picked up can be quickly determined at the table by those who show up. Remember, bigger dungeons will usually require multi-session delves. Abandoning them to go to town would be unwise esp if opposition is intelligent

Yes. I've been running an open-table sandbox game since 2022 (151 sessions so far). All you need is to keep track of time and who is where. All my players have at least three characters, which makes it easier to drop in and out.

They also have quite different magical treasure. Water one can have only treasure map, further driving the hoard value up. Land can have map or magic, while desert has only magic. Since there is chance for multiple treasure maps in land hoard, I'd expect that its avg would be greater than desert avg

Sound design decision. A1/2/3 might be the way to go. I frequently use lbb treasure tables; they are just so versatile. I do resort to AD&D tables when I need more granular/finer results.

Sounds great, thank you for the recommendation!

Great work! I see there are minor % and dies rolled differences compared to the source material. How so? Is it due to calculations / balance or some other reasons? Treasure type A was also distinguished by land/desert/water, with the last one being quite massive (cca 2--5 times larger than land one)

#OD&D at #Cauldron #OSR con 2/3

It was an amazing con, hands down the best European con for anyone desiring to play old-school Dungeons & Dragons, be it any flavour of the originals from the 70s, or the first edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.

I wrote 17 000 words on the experience, shared 👇

Nice! What's OD&D "by the book" here? 3lbbs? Whole line? Something else?

I don't think Ever & Anon would make for a great venue for self-promotion but who knows. Fight On! zine (not an APA) would be better fit for that, since it is exclusively OSR focused, has been around since 2008, and allows for advertising: www.fightonzine.com

I think you'll get the best feeling if you thumb through the published issues. People write about their experiences, share play reports, reviews, so on and so forth. It is a bit like blogging and commenting before either were a thing.

APA is in essence a collection of fanzines distributed as a single volume.

Every contributor sends in a zine, about anything really, as long as it is focused on roleplaying games.

Contributor guidelines are reprinted in every issue, plus here everanon.org#contributor-...

Toads are tough AF! They can take down unsuspecting players in few rolls :D

Can't wait for the campaign to launch!

Have you thought about contributing a zine too? 😎
