Whenever I am reminded of this I always think how we need more fundamental research on non-mammal brain structures to inform fields like neuromorphic computing and network efficiency.

Zara and I overlapped in our PhDs at Carnegie Mellon. Even so early in her career she was a vocal advocate for open science and social justice. The thought that I can never hear her thoughts on our life events again is inconceivable and devastating. Much love to all who have been touched by her.

And let's not forget the role of dogs as a lifesaving model from Anna and the first bypass shunts (exhibits.library.jhu.edu/exhibits/sho...) to contemporary imaging studies, large animal models have saved countless children and adults.
