Melissa is moving toward the north-northeast near 7 mph (11 km/h). A turn toward the northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected later today, followed by a faster northeastward motion on Wednesday and Thursday. On the forecast track, the core of Melissa is expected to make landfall on Jamaica during the next several hours, move across southeastern Cuba Wednesday morning, and move across the southeastern or central Bahamas later on Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds are near 175 mph (280 km/h) with highergusts. Melissa is a category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-SimpsonHurricane Wind Scale. Little change in strength is expected before Melissa makes landfall on Jamaica. Melissa is expected to reach Jamaica and southeastern Cuba as an extremely dangerous major hurricane, and it will still be at hurricane strength when it moves across the southeastern Bahamas. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) fromthe center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195miles (315 km). During the past few hours, Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica, reported a sustained wind of 43 mph (69 km/h) and a gust of 59 mph (93 km/h). Also during the past few hours, Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, reported a sustained wind of 38 mph (61 km/h) and a gust of 54 mph (87 km/h). Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin in eastern Cubatoday, with hurricane conditions expected in the hurricane warningarea starting tonight into Wednesday morning. Tropical stormconditions are expected in Haiti later today and Wednesday. Hurricane conditions are expected in the southeastern and centralBahamas on Wednesday. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK----------------------At 800 PM AST (0000 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Jerry was located by Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft near latitude 14.9 North, longitude 55.4 West. Jerry is moving quickly toward the west-northwest near 21 mph (33 km/h) and and this general motion is expected to continue through Thursday. A northwestward motion at a slower forward speed should begin Thursday night, followed by a northward motion Friday night and Saturday. On the forecast track, the center of Jerry is expected to pass near or to the northeast of the northern Leeward Islands late Thursday and Thursday night. Aircraft dropsonde data indicates that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph (105 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Jerry could become a hurricane late this week or this weekend. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km)from the center. The minimum central pressure estimated by Air Force Reserve dropsonde data is 999 mb (29.50 inches). The depression is moving slowly toward the northwest near 5 mph (7 km/h). A north-northwestward motion is expected to begin tonight and continue through Monday. On the forecast track, the center of the system is expected to move across the central and northwestern Bahamas on Sunday and Sunday night and approach the southeast U.S. coast early next week. Maximum sustained winds remain near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is expected during the next few days, and the system is forecast to become a tropical storm tonight or early Sunday and a hurricane by late Monday or Tuesday. The estimated minimum central pressure measured by aircraft dropsonde data is 1005 mb (29.68 inches). Southwestern Atlantic (AL94):<br>Showers and thunderstorms continue to show signs of organization in <br>association with a tropical wave located near Hispaniola, the <br>Turks and Caicos Islands, and eastern Cuba. An area of low pressure <br>is expected to form along the wave by tonight when it moves near the <br>southeast Bahamas.
