A day trip to the Nairobi National Park is always a treat.
Lots of good things happening here.

The black rhino conservation program, especially, has been very successful, with rhino numbers having doubled since the '80s.

The park is now nicknamed "Kifaru Ark", which means Rhino Sanctuary.

Doges ruled Venice until Napoleon's conquest in 1797.

During the Renaissance, the Venetian School had pioneered new artistic styles. In music, Venice led in opening opera to the public in 1637.

I watched Verdi's opera about Roman refugees that founded Venice in 421 AD, having fled Attila's terror.

In its heyday, Venice Republic thrived as a trade hub. Goods arrived on the 'Shore of Slaves' that abuts the Doge's Palace & the Prison. The Doge had a view from a Palace front window.

The Palace & Prison are connected by the 'Bridge of Sighs' that captives & convicts walked through to their cells.

The Doge's Palace in Venice is a reminder of the 15th & 16th century heyday of that Republic. The Doge (Head of State), once elected, lived here for life.

Membership in Venice's aristocracy wasn't land based; it was bought with money. Having a Doge in one's family was the ultimate status symbol.

So fascinating to see achievements of the Golden Age of Florence, Italy.

It'll be worth a return visit in 5 years when the restoration in the Baptistry & the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore will be complete.

What a coincidence to be in Rome at such a historic time! Though I missed the white smoke, I felt the crowd's excitement as people were leaving St. Peter's Square this evening.

My students & I were very impressed with the hopeful, painstaking & important work being done at CATIE University's Orthodox Seed Germplasm Bank in Costa Rica. Their 6,000+ seed holding is second only to the Global Seed Vault in Svalbard, Norway.

At -20C, we could only stay inside for 2 minutes!
