I've seen SO much artwork of furry characters with 'tattoos' and asked this question for years. In the end I've settled for thinking 'Maybe the exact explanation doesn't matter so long as it looks good' or better 'Maybe not having an answer keeps people scratching heads about these characters'

...clearly matters to you, and if it's not working for you right now then there's a good chance it will in the future but it's fine to take time to question how well things are working for you right now.
