“I think we still have some cake in the fridge. I’ll even make you some hot chocolate in congratulations.”

“Do we have any milk bread left?”

“Come on, let’s go check.”

Grateful that he wasn’t alone. He had a feeling Oikawa knew that too now. “Hey,” Iwaizumi tugged at Oikawa’s hair, prompting him to look up. His heart clenched painfully at the red rimmed eyes and he smiled softly, gesturing inside.

Iwaizumi understood. He understood so well the feeling of succeeding at something, learning something new, and wanting to tell his family. Only to return to a cold home and possibly another argument waiting to happen. He was even more grateful now that he and Oikawa weren’t fighting anymore.

He blinked in confusion, brows furrowed as Oikawa continued to hide his face. Iwaizumi opened his mouth to offer congratulations, he knew how much Oikawa struggled in that class, before he continued. “I was so excited, I wanted to come home and tell my moms about it. But...”

“Did something happen at school?” Oikawa sniffed and turned away, once again hiding his face in his knees.

Iwaizumi watched as Oikawa fiddled with the bracelet at his wrist before speaking into his knees. “I passed that quiz in Mathematics, got the best score."

Sometimes he spent hours studying into the night before realizing (by human standards) that it was late and he needed sleep. “Too homesick to sleep?”

Iwaizumi wondered how far Oikawa’s lower lip could go, watching with a raised brow as he jutted it further. “Yeah...”

scrunched and his pout becoming more prominent.

“If you’re awake at three in the morning asking me if I miss the ocean, I don’t think it’s nothing,” Iwaizumi deadpanned. Not that he could talk, after so long living in the deep sea, their sense of when it was appropriate to sleep was still off.

“It’s nothing. It was stupid.”

“It’s not stupid if it was bothering you,” Iwaizumi mentioned with another nudge.

“It’s really nothing.” Oikawa whispered, digging his chin into his knees. Iwaizumi rolled his eyes and pinched Oikawa in his side. Oikawa yelped and swatted at Iwaizumi, his nose

“Rude!” Oikawa sputtered in response, Iwaizumi could feel the glare focused on him as he continued to stare upward. He grinned and finally turned back to Oikawa, nudging him and copying his vague gesture from earlier. Oikawa huffed and turned back to gaze at the ocean, a pout forming on his lips.

“But then I remember I’m not alone here. I’m not the only one struggling.” He spared a quick glance from the sky to Oikawa just in time to see him hide his pinkened cheeks into his knees. “Even if that company is utter trash.”

“Sometimes,” Iwaizumi breathed. “I miss my family, my pod. I want to tell these land dwellers to shove off, to leave me alone and mind their business.”

“Such a brute Iwa-chan,” Iwaizumi ignored the murmured response and moved his arms to his sides so that he could lean back and look at the stars.

thought for the meantime. Iwaizumi sighed and dropped to sit beside the brunette, legs crossed and arms perched on his knees as he contemplated. He could see from the corner of his eye that Oikawa was scrutinizing him, waiting for a response.

“The sea, the ocean, 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦.” Oikawa explained, exasperated. “Do you miss it?”

Iwaizumi pursed his lips and regarded Oikawa more seriously, watching as he gripped his legs a little tighter. Vulnerability like this was so rare from him, he briefly wondered what had been the cause but disregarded the

He raised a thin brow and stood beside the seated boy.

“Miss what?” Oikawa sighed and propped his head on his knees, turning to look beyond the balcony, gesturing vaguely in front of him. “Am I supposed to understand that?”

This was all new to him, he was still getting used to the fact that they had called a truce(or whatever this respite could be called). Still adjusting to the lack of insults and biting words and jealousy.

“Do you ever miss it?” Iwaizumi almost missed the quiet query, so lost in his own thoughts.
