I intend to do a much deeper dive into this collection at some point in the future. It deserves it. And after all, what's not to like about David Tennant and Shakespeare, right?

David lent his voice to seven plays — 'Henry VI', 'Macbeth', 'Richard III', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'The Comedy of Errors', and 'The Merchant of Venice'.

The two photos Burnett released are all we’ve seen since then. Gotta admit — I'm very curious abt what other Tennant treasures her archive may hold!

n June 2019, photographer @sheilabphoto shared two archive shots of a young David Tennant — taken while she was the principal photographer for The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare, an epic BBC audio project first released on cassette (1999–2000) and later on 98 CDs in 2003.

Yes, we know Michael Sheen played Romeo first (and if this were Staged, there’d be words!)-but today’s all about David.

COMING SOON (w/@smallmegapixel.bsky.social): Part II of The Sheenant Chronicles. I dive into David Tennant’s plague-ridden RSC Romeo and Juliet (2000–01).

Ghosts were involved!!

David wrote an essay about playing Touchstone in 1998 which was included in 'Players of Shakespeare 4: Further Essays in Shakespearean Performance by Players with the Royal Shakespeare Company' by Robert Smallwood.

The essay can be found in various places. Here are excerpts from it at Google Books:

But did you know that when the exhibition first opened in 2016, it showed off David’s brightly checkered jester’s coat in red, green, and yellow, with a three-pronged hat and jingling bells, which he wore as Touchstone in 'As You Like It' in 1996?

Yup!

And it looks like you might even see the nail varnish David used as Richard II in the production of the same name:

Right now, you can spot David ’s famous red screen-printed t-shirt from his 2008 Hamlet:

If you’ve never been, there's a free exhibition on Level 1 of the RSC's Swan Theatre in Stratford called 'The Play’s The Thing '. Since 2016, it’s been showing off Stratford’s rich theatre history—costumes, props, film, sound, and even a 1623 First Folio!
