One day before firing... tomorrow is a hot day for these cups, jugs, bowls, whorls and dishes.
Most of them are replicas made after Roman, late medieval and early modern pottery.

Around the year 2000 26% of Dutch people are living below sea level.

The picture is part of a series entitled "Normal". I made it in 2020. My good friend Kasper posed in the cold water as businessman.

Some pottery I made for Caesar's Ford Theatre in the US. It's now traveling over the Atlantic Ocean. To the right you can see the 17th century pieces that were used for reference.

I very much need to go there, even if it's just to say hello to the jug that I based this one on, and also to a stag shaped aquamanile. I love creature shaped pottery 😅

The Louvre is a kind of majolica heaven! I visited the museum on Friday and saw this extraordinary pitcher. Dating: 1480. Made in Faenza, Italy.

I usually don't do cartoons but this guy makes me so angry. Wilders is a nonsense populist with dangerous xenophobic ideas. Today he took a dump on the Netherlands by dropping out of the Cabinet, blaming others while he was at the steering wheel.

Which piece do you like best?
They are still hot from the kiln. Most of them are replicas of historical originals from the 13th to the 17th century.

Some people think air pockets in pottery are dangerous, but it's really moist💧. Water expands about 1700 times when it turns into steam... you can move a train with that! So, drying your pottery is important. And: firing GENTLY.

The Roman mortarium was used for grinding food. That's why the inside has a rough surface. Below: my replica. Original: Rijksmuseum van Oudheden / dating 1-300 AD /

My painting "Nobody's Land".
So much has existed far before the existence of humans. We might consider acting less like masters of our surroundings and more like travelers.

So you would expect that even this special Bartmann jug was made in a series. But I haven't seen another one! Until I made this replica. Now there's a chance for me to continue the Bartmann tradition with series of this dude... and other Bartmann jugs of course!
May 13, 2025 at 10:59 AM
Although... they were made with moulds! Not one huge mould to cast the whole thing but smaller ones for different details. The jugs themselves where first thrown on the potter's wheel and then decorated with thin sheets of clay that were pressed in those moulds.

Now back to the full body Bartmann jug that I started with. The one with the pewter lid is the original that was probably made between 1525-1550 in Cologne. It's now in the Victoria and Albert museum. Bartmann jugs came in many varieties but this one, with a body and hands, is quite unique.

Here's a typical 17th century Bartmann (replica again). It's angry and it has every reason: in the 17th century, the Bartmann jug is more and more considered a storage jar instead of a prestigious jug to put on the table.

The Bartmann jug (from German "Bartmann" - bearded man) was especially popular in the 16th century. They came in many varieties, some with only a bearded face, some entirely covered in ornaments and texts. This very happy Bartman would have been common around 1600 (only this is a replica again).

Which Bartmann jug is 500 years old, left or right? This dude is a true masterpiece of 16th century stoneware and I've just finished my first replica.

I'm trying out marbling techniques. The two small bowls are finished, the tall bottle is still in progress. The 17th century original in the picture was made in northern Italy. Marbled wares like these used to be shipped far and wide.

I just finished this dragon pot. The body and the lid are wheel thrown. All the other details are sculpted by hand. I fired the dragon in my wood kiln at 1250°C.

Fresh from the kiln: my first try at a filigree jug! The original jug dates back to 1550-1600 and was found in a potter's waste dump in the Aulgasse in Siegburg. Collection Boijmans van Beuningen.
