Combining and processing a bunch of netcdfs. There is probably a more efficient way of chunking in Python than I applied (I'm more of an R guy) but then again I applied a pretty brute force approach in Julia and haven't implemented threading yet, so the inefficiencies are equally distributed

Surprisingly, it seems completely, totally, absolutely open source and available via hugging face or direct download (in addition to the typical api)

I really enjoyed What Moves the Dead, a retelling of the Fall of the House of Usher by a North Carolinian author who also lives in a blue dot :)

Choke

It is still a fun-ish read, but I kinda cringe at the moments I know I would have reveled in years ago

It's not the value of the coin at any given moment. It's ability to take massive bribes directly. Watch for big purchases by whales whenever a trade deal is being negotiated.

Shocking to see this coming from an heiress to apartheid emerald mines who espouses white replacement theory and openly supports limiting government participation to "high value males"

Currently only big institutional investors have access to those data for $$$$$. I think it is cool that agentic AI is making it possible to share those data more widely

Not every piece of software is inherently evil. Some friends and I are processing high resolution climate projections (droughts, wildfires, hurricanes, etc.) and plan to make them available to NGOs for free.

Fair point wrt the Palisades specifically, but there are other exburbs being impacted that are totally relevant. The article also explicity describes many other contributing factors (e.g., controlled burn policy, insurance), they just focus on zoning as one factor for this particular article
January 13, 2025 at 4:21 PM
How so? Do you disagree that zoning restrictions on high density housing result in sprawl? Or that low income folks benefit from higher density zoning while the wealthy benefit from increased property values when housing supply is artificially constrained?

Totally agree that AI will put a ton of downward pressure on early-to-mid-level tech and creative jobs. A potential silver lining is that AI(agents) lower the barrier to entry in the start-up world, such that there is a real alternative to the incestuous tech-bro Silicon Valley venture capital route

LLMs have mostly replaced my jr data scientists (not my choice, but I managed ok after they were downsized and not replaced). IMO, folks with deep subject matter expertise will remain safe for a while. But the world is already very scary for jr folks - which bodes poorly for career development

Wild so many people are reflexively saying "Good." Any civilian would be jailed for what Hunter did. Yes Trump has committed and pardoned many more and many worse crimes, but that doesn't change the facts of Hunter's case.

Though any libertarian would love to change some of those laws...

Thanks for the rec, kids had a blast. The sorcerer went down a few times but the kids were rolling rocks and everyone survived

Lol, same. But probably for the best since it keeps people from misleading by stealthily editing their old comments. Still annoying though
