Waiting on regression to the mean. Stats, graphs, and gifs.

@cpoage9.bsky.social for non-Astros stuff.
Thank you for everything, Chas.

I believe Chas would be a good low-cost option for a team looking to strengthen their outfield depth. However, it was time for the Astros to move on; a change of scenery was needed.

A new voice with your hitting coaches could help, but if they don't adjust the actual roster, we'll probably see more of the same results next season.

Playing around with some data today and the Astros against pitches 100+ mph since 2021.

2023 was a weird season, y'all.

Pitching staffs are never the same year-to-year, much less even similar across multiple seasons, but it's fun to see what has changed in terms of pitch movement.

Also, the 2022 staff was just incredible.

As a follow-up, we all know Christian Walker had issues with four-seam fastballs in 2025 compared to past seasons, home or road. That much isn't in dispute.

With that said, I find the stark difference between home and the road whiff rates fascinating, considering the past batter eye adjustments.

Injuries, especially to Paredes, notably hampered the Astros' efforts to improve their pitch selectivity. There was some improvement, but it was not substantial.

Whatever the Astros do in the offseason, I hope they can somewhat reverse this trend against sliders.
Only the Rockies posted a worse Batter Run Value against sliders (-36) this season.

There are 23 pitchers with a RS/GS (runs scored per game started) under 4.0 runs. Framber Valdez (3.3 RS/GS) and Hunter Brown (3.9 RS/GS) are among those 23.

Of course, the lineup hasn’t been producing regardless in recent months, no matter the pitcher.
September 25, 2025 at 4:57 PM
In the season’s second half, only four teams have scored less runs than the Astros (241). Just two teams have had a lower slugging percentage than Houston (.378).
September 22, 2025 at 3:55 PM
Somehow, the Astros are 84-69.
September 18, 2025 at 6:20 PM
Framber Valdez in his first 25 starts: 51.6% In-Zone%

In his last 4 starts: 48.4% In-Zone%

In all honesty, it’s a momentary blip, but not a coincidence he’s allowed 14 earned runs in his last 23 innings (5.48 ERA).

A good evening for a ballgame.
September 14, 2025 at 12:22 AM
Extremely aggravating.

I know he is retired and all, but FanGraphs must add this photo (or something similar) to Ken Griffey Jr.'s profile.

I'm going to enjoy watching Ramón Urías at third base.

Yes, the Astros have the fewest plate appearances by a left-handed hitter this season (255) and by a wide margin. The Angels are 29th with only 519 PA from a LHH.

Alas, the below plot illustrates how imbalanced this lineup is, especially without Yordan Alvarez.

C’mon Chas.
July 26, 2025 at 12:37 AM
I’m upset with Chas.
July 20, 2025 at 4:50 AM
I’ve seen this score before…

FWIW, Outs Above Average (OAA) by right fielders this season.

Cam Smith in June (88 PA)
.309/.364/.481, 6.8% BB%, 23.9% K%, 3 HR, 5 2B, 141 wRC+

Thanks again, Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly, for the memories. And welcome back (for three games).
