"why don't use use an actual axe and just rename/texture it?"
because recipes don't take into account the extra data- it only cares what the item id is... meaning if I used another axe, any recipes containing that axe (smelting etc.) would still work with the custom one

a bit of the behind-the-scenes of how this works (all of the music discs are the item "minecraft:music_disc_13" so I can use the other music discs for custom crafting recipes (the fragments are actually music_disc_cat, music_disc_blocks, music_disc_chirp, music_disc_far, and music_disc_mall))
