Astronomy and Beer
@astronomyandbeer.bsky.social
Im just your plain vanilla astrophotographer and amateur astronomer. I take pictures of the night sky and talk about beer. I am an advocate for dark skies and the reduction of light pollution. I am a civil engineer by profession and politically neutral.
Nothing special in terms of processing. No filters, no specialized lenses; just my basic iPhone13 camera set on 3 second exposures. Certainly not as colorful as the northern territories, but pretty darn good for latitude 42. #Wyoming #northernlights #photography #iphonephotography

I’ve been struck down in my prime. I was cleaning an area for my telescope when out of nowhere, this tree stabbed me in my ear and broke my eardrum. I gave this tree life and it strikes me down. I think I might play the lottery. #thissucks

Its about time of year for the cooler constellations to start being visible earlier in the night. How many constellations can you find in this star map? #astronomy #starmaps

First narrowband image: The Elephant’s Trunk Nebula.

25 hours of integration in the Hubble SHO palette using 6nm filters.

This one taught me how patient you have to be to see color in hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen — but when it works, it really works.

New image coming. Finally got all of my data gathered and preprocessed. Now the fun stuff begins… making it all color. Choice of brew was A OK from the Gruner Bros. #astronomy #astrophotography #photography #bluesky

300s vs 600s subs in OIII: longer subs don’t give you more detail — they give you more data. Detail comes from stacking and integration. Think: subs = data, stacking = detail.

Note to self. When scouting some land piece of land on the mountain to build a small observatory, buy some fuel first.

I literally rolled into the gas station! Thank the creator for gravity. 😂

Very cool! I am going to reprocess mine. Mine is super electric. It looks like a neon sign at a supermarket 😆

Throwing in the towel on this one. After 3 irritating months of bad weather and 8 separate imaging sessions, please enjoy my take on M20 - the Trifid Nebula.

It's coming along. This one has been challenging for a lot of different reasons... Hoping to have this one done by this evening. #astrophotography #domesticbeer

WTF!!
#astrophotography

Chance of clouds: yesterday 0%, today 100% and 81% of rain.

🤬

At least there is beer in my fridge

Finally have nearly a full week of calm clear skies. 20% of rain on Wednesday... probably 100% now that I have the scope set up. I need two more days on this target... need the green and luminance data. This image is a single 300s sub in red. #astrophotography #astronomy #bluesky #beer #beerlovers

You can do astrophotography with basic equipment. Anyone who tells you differently, is gate keeping this satisfying hobby. This was captured with my stock Canon 600D and a Canon EF 200mm lens piggy backed on my telescope. It 87 minutes of data. #astrophotography #beginnertips #photography #bluesky

Its happening! Clear skies!

Its so beautiful!
July 1, 2025 at 3:33 AM
This is BULLSHIT!

The forecast is 4 solid nights of clear skies. Do you know how long it takes to set up and calibrate gear?!? #damnclouds #astrophotography

Well that was unexpected. 😂
Asking ChatGPT (or rather Aurora… she named herself) how to desolder a capacitor without frying the nearby components and this was its response.

Botched last night’s setup—too close to the house, couldn’t see the pole star. So I focused on dialing in the EAF and filter offsets. This morning: cord management. Hook-and-loop straps for the win. Main rig is officially 100% done. Time to build out the 16” Meade LX200.

I am ordering the replacement capacitors for my new 16" Meade LX200. Who's brilliant idea was it to apply tariffs to everything? Oh wait...

I know its only $0.28 and the shipping costs more than my whole order, but its still annoying. #telescope #telescoperepair #astrophotography #tariff

It’s been raining every night lately, which has stalled my usual projects — but I spotted something worth sharing. After five years of struggling, my blackberry bush finally bloomed. One flower. That’s it. And after all this time, the birds will probably get my blackberry before me 😆. #photography

1/5 Im stepping up the game with Astronomy and Beer. Check out what I acquired this weekend! For the song and dance price of driving to Jackson Hole and picking it up. Brand new, opened box Meade 16” LX200. #astronomy #astrophotography #photography #telescope

PSA - grizzly bears are not pets. They are wild animals and they will kill you. DO. NOT. GET. OUT. OF. YOUR. VEHICLE! There are signs everywhere! We were maybe 20 feet from these and some tourists were outside of their vehicles taking pictures. Don’t be stupid tourists. Be smart and live. #tetons
