I think there is a balance to be struck — 25 years ago, universities needed to become more professional in their governance, but now the governance has become an end in itself.

Irwin was my boss at the CfA. There are many wonderful stories about him. My favorite is this. He bore a striking resemblance to Woody Allen. Someone once stopped him in the street & asked for his autograph. He obliged. I wonder if they thought Mr Allen was playing a joke signing as Prof Shapiro.

The cabling got tangled around the telescope when it rotated too far in one direction — it really shouldn’t happen!

It’s a comet. That’s why the vast majority of the material it is outgassing is made up of volatiles, the way a comet does.
