#astrophotos In 1054 CE something blew up in the sky. Chinese and Japanese records are better while European were a bit sparse (too busy killing each other). Regardless, in the same general area this is what can be photographed. It is M 1 AKA the Crab nebula (CRAB? Really?😆). Narrow band version.
Photograph of the object called the Crab nebula, taken with a telescope (17") and a CCD camera in December 2022. It is a narrow band false color image, that is using filter that only let through Red (Hydrogen light) and OIII (oxygen ions blue). These filters cut down on light pollution.

The Thor’s Helmet Nebula (NGC 2359) in the constellation of Canis Major (The Great Dog)

This chart shows the location of the Thor’s Helmet Nebula (NGC 2359, marked with a red circle). This unusual object was observed using the VLT on the occasion of ESO’s 50th Anniversary, 5 October 2012, with the help of Brigitte Bailleul — winner of the Tweet Your Way to the VLT! competition. The observations were broadcast live over the internet from the Paranal Observatory in Chile. It can be seen as a large, but faint, glow in moderate-sized amateur telescopes.
