Then, I spent some time chopping my little transparent images out by phone-light. Hopefully, the students don't mind some weird ones!

I did manage to get the transparancies to work, but I had to alter the images a little since there is no white ink....

Fortunately, someone at the institute decided not to throw out old-school transparencies, and I'm Millennial enough to remember they exist... so I decided to street-fight the printer.

It's a good thing I checked my supplies because I'm really short on some of the stickers. I have an activity where we use stickers of the Orion Nebula created by @livwithoutlimit.bsky.social to show the importance of using different wavelength observations.

Tomorrow, I'm teaching a guest lesson for IMC Weekendschool students about light and telescopes. This is the third year in a row, and it's always a lot of fun, but I didn't have a chance to go check my supplies until today. The uni turns the lights off out of hours, which is great for energy 😅

One of my favorite possessions is a population science book from 1893 that talks about Vulcan, but raises doubts that it's real.
There's also an entry about the aether (!!)

The best part was actually sitting and watching them alone. So much of my Star Wars experience in the last 10 (?) years has been tainted by online Fandom discourse and having to critique the media instead of just enjoying it.
The memes have been on fire though 😆

I recently spent some vacation time catching up on the new Star Wars series from this year. I'd been so tired and overloaded that I didn't have the energy until now. I watched all the films before my catch up with my kids drifting in and out (my 8yo son screaming "Hello There" as needed).
December 7, 2024 at 10:16 PM
I'm always wary about invoking Fandom in public spaces, but so far, I've only met my science peeps on here and wouldn't mind some fan stuff in my feed.
#StarWars obsessed since 1994, #LotR / #Tolkien since 2001
I got my shrines but they could use a better setup
I'm tired of critics, good vibes only

It's up there with "GROND!"

JWST is very good, but it's ALMA for me 🤩📡

Congratulations to the new Dr Kanwar!

Now Prof Inga Kamp gets to say nice things about Jayatee

Propositions (especially the non-science ones) hold the subtle stories and often struggles of a PhD student's research experience.

I love this room so much 😍

My friend and groupmate Jayatee Kanwaar is defending her PhD thesis today! Her work was on chemical evolution in Protoplanetary and planet forming disks. The thesis defense is one of the best ceremonies at the University 💖 I'm always so proud of my friends

My youngest was born in the 3rd year of my PhD (I guess I like being pregnant 3rd year) and because of Dutch education law and moving to the US, he had a completely different experience. By the time I went back to work, my oldest was almost 5 so there were very few legal reasons to be out of school.

I have always been the main caregiver as my (now ex) husband suffers from NEAD , and conference childcare allowed me to work while my child was safe and entertained all day. Evenings, we played and strengthened our bond. I will always be grateful to Kapteyn Institute for paying for her extra costs

We moved to NL when she was only 1 ½ so she learned Dutch pretty quickly and acted as my little astronomy mascot at the institute and at conferences (until she had to go to school). She got to see Greece, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, and Italy all before she was 5 thanks to *conference childcare*

As a #first-gen, non-traditional / mature student, my life and career milestones haven't exactly gone in the "correct" order. My oldest was born in the summer between the end of my Bachelors and the masters year of my MPhys at Leeds, which made for a weird year.

It's been 6 years since I defended my thesis, and I find my propositions could have been more aggressive... #EDI #SocialJustice

As an ALMA fangirl, my dream came true last December after the ALMA 10yr conference. The very awesome ALMA folx brought some participants to the telescope site. I passed the blood pressure test and joined all of the other nerds at 5000m 🤩
The energy was a lot like going to a midnight LotR showing 😁

Speaking of successful #astronomoms, I got to meet Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell last year after being a huge fangirl for 20 years. I went to Amsterdam with my daughter, and after sobbing a lot and telling her how inspiring she is, she said that proper childcare is so valuable to women in STEM.
